About A Dark Room
A Dark Room opens with nothing: a cold room, a dying fire, and the single word "stoke". From that seed grows one of the most admired incremental games ever made. What starts as survival — keeping a fire lit, gathering wood — unfolds layer by layer into resource management, village building, exploration, and eventually a phase that few players see coming and fewer will spoil. The joy is in the unfolding.
The writing is restrained on purpose. Every line is short, every action a single verb. That minimalism is the trick: it lets your imagination fill the world, and it makes each new system feel like a genuine discovery rather than a tutorialized feature. The game is short enough to finish in a weekend but sticky enough to eat the whole weekend. Open-source and freely hosted by the original author, A Dark Room is the canonical example of how much depth a browser tab can hide behind a few words.
How to Play
Click the actions that appear on screen — early on, just "stoke fire" and "gather wood". New actions unlock as your situation changes; you do not need to plan, only respond. The interface will introduce new resources, buildings and eventually maps as they become relevant.
Strategy: avoid guides on a first playthrough — the unfolding is the game. Keep the fire lit. When you can gather wood, do it constantly. Let idle mechanics work: close the tab and come back to find resources accumulated. The mid-game shift is intentional; lean into whatever the game offers next rather than resisting it.
